Greenville Gas Prices Climb More Than 8 Cents per Gallon in past Week

(File/ FOX Carolina)

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) –

Gas prices are on the rise in Greenville.

Gas Buddy, a fuel price tracking service, reported Monday that the price per gallon in Greenville had risen nearly four times more than the national average in the past week.

Gas Buddy stated that average retail gasoline prices in Greenville had risen 8.6 cents per gallon, averaging $2.11 per gallon, the national average saw an increase of 2.1 cents per gallon to $2.33 per gallon.

Current prices in Greenville are 30 cents higher than they were one year ago and 16.3 cents higher than one month ago.

In Spartanburg, gas prices went up 8.1 cents a gallon to $2.06.

Asheville only saw a 0.7 cent uptick in prices to $2.21 per gallon.

“For the third straight week, gasoline prices have accelerated with the national average at its highest level in over eight weeks, driven by rising oil prices as inventories continue to tighten and concern over Venezuela lingers,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. “Looking behind us however, gas prices have remained in a relatively tight range for the last year, staying within a 30 cent wide range. While we’re likely to see gas prices continuing to move higher in the week ahead as they catch up to oil, we’re unlikely to break out of the well-established rut in the national average which has kept prices between $2.12 and $2.42 for the last 15 months.”

911 Calls in Greenville, Pickens Co Homicides Released

Please install the latest Adobe Flash Player Plugin to watch this content.

GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – Newly released 911 calls are revealing the moments before and after a shooting that left four people dead. The Greenville Police Department has released phone calls that may shed light on why Jessica Edens shot and killed herself and three others.

The calls are from her husband, Benjamin Edens, and the woman she killed, Meredith Rahme. Both were reporting harassing phone calls they say came from Jessica Edens.

Benjamin reported harassing phone calls and texts from his wife, while Rahme told dispatchers a woman had been contacting her friends, family and co-workers.

“There is somebody that is angry with me, and she is contacting over the internet…just everybody that I know and work with, and sends them messages about me,” Rahme told dispatchers. “She has contacted me in the past, but right now it’s just people…family, friends, and co-workers. Does that constitute a restraining order?”

Police also released the calls from the day Rahme was shot and killed in a downtown Greenville apartment garage.

“I’m at 644 Main Street, it’s at the coroner of Main and Stone and there’s a woman that’s been shot,” said the 911 caller.

Police say the calls from Benjamin Edens and Meredith Rahme happened in June, nearly one month before the deadly shootings.

Baby Found In Trash Bag At South Carolina Restaurant, Dies At Hospital

GREENVILLE, SC — A restaurant worker in South Carolina found a baby inside a trash bag when it ripped open and now a 19-year-old woman is facing charges.

The employee was dragging the trash across the La Parilla parking lot on July 12 when the bag tore. Authorities were called and the baby boy was declared dead at a hospital.

The baby’s mother, Estela Ruiz-Gomez, is charged with homicide by child abuse, Greenville Police spokesman Johnathan Bragg said. She gave birth in the restaurant bathroom.(For more local news, click here to sign up for real-time news alerts. If you have an iPhone, click here to get the free Patch iPhone app.)

Her 41-year-old mother, Lorenza Rodriguez, faces charges of helping her daughter get rid of the baby, authorities said.

The child would probably have survived if he wasn’t put in the trash, the coroner said.

It’s unclear whether the women have attorneys.

Bww Review: Hairspray Brings Colorful Music and Fun to Greenville Little Theatre

Singing. Dancing. Comedy. A (sadly) still relevant message of tolerance.

Couldn’t we all stand to have a little more of that in our lives right now?

Well, it’s exactly what Greenville Little Theatre delivers with their colorful new production of the musical Hairspray.

It’s the story of Tracy Turnblad (Mary Evan Giles), a Baltimore teenager who longs to join the “nicest kids in town” on The Corny Collins Show, a local version of American Bandstand. Along the way, she falls in love with teen heartthrob Link Larkin (Carter Allen), leads a campaign to racially integrate the TV show, and helps welcome her mother, Edna (Jon Kilpatrick), to the sixties.

The musical, based on a 1988 John Waters movie, is simply joyous, filled with memorable tunes by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and a clever book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. It’s become a staple of the musical repertoire and is always guaranteed to be a good time.

Director Suzanne McCalla put together a talented and energetic ensemble to bring the show to life. She fills the stage with appealingly cartoonish backgrounds (nicely designed by Ryan Bradburn) that work particularly well in big numbers like “Welcome to the Sixties” and “Run and Tell That.” That second number also stands out as a demonstration of the cast’s solid – and sometimes very impressive – dance chops as they bring Kimberlee Ferreira’s joyous choreography to life.

Mary Evan Giles, with a strong voice and cheerful presence, is perfectly perky as Tracy. She’s a dynamic performer who makes it easy to see why the character can both introduce new dance moves and serve as a civil rights leader. She also has an easy chemistry with the likeable Carter Allen as Link, the object of her affections.

Christina Yasi, as Tracy’s best friend, Penny, makes a strong impression with her pleasing voice and comic delivery. Similarly, Kristofer Parker brings impressive vocal and dance skills to his role of Seaweed, the object of Penny’s affections.

Jon Kilpatrick has a sly touch and arch sensibility as Tracy’s mother, Edna, a role traditionally played by a male (see if you can spot the clever nod to the character’s origin in the set design).

Other standouts include Mary Freeman and Cat McWhirter as scheming mother and daughter Velma and Amber Von Tussle, Ryan Bradburn’s goofy expressions as Tracy’s father, Wilbur, and the powerful voices of Jessica Eckenrod, Meg Jones, and Grace McGrath as The Dynamites.

A real show-stopper, though, was Khristin Stephens as Motormouth Maybelle. With a dynamic presence and huge voice to match, she managed to bring chills and cheers with her two big numbers, “Big, Blonde, and Beautiful” and “I Know Where I’ve Been.”

Thomas Brooks designed the colorful costumes and Tim St. Clair II served as musical director. His work with the ensemble – coupled with the dynamic choreography – especially shines on big numbers like “Without Love” and the show’s bouncy, energetic finale.

While there were some troublesome sound issues on the night I attended – including microphone feedback and some muddy lyrics – that shouldn’t dissuade you from attending. After all, you can’t stop the beat.

Hairspray runs through June 25 at Greenville Little Theatre, 444 College St, Greenville, SC. For tickets and show times call the box office at 864-233-6238 or visit greenvillelittletheatre.org.
